After being re-elected to a third term as Member of Congress, Representative Raúl M. Grijalva remains committed to the needs of his constituents in Congressional District 7.
In the first one-hundred hours of the current 110th session of Congress, Raul supported legislation that reflected the values and priorities of the American people. He demonstrated resolve to serve the working class by ensuring student loan relief, establish a fair minimum wage and provide lower prescription drug costs. In response to deteriorating foreign policy, Raúl supported progressive and open policy by cosponsoring recommendations made by the 9/11 commission on terrorism and helped establish a pathway to energy independence.
Raúl has a solid base of enthusiastic supporters due to the exceptional record of public service he has had within the region. From 1974 to 1986, Raúl served on the Tucson Unified District Governing Board and came to be known for his advocacy of teacher and employee rights, civil rights, and public education. Continuing to work towards the improvement of these conditions, Raúl was elected to the Pima County Board of Supervisors in 1988, which he served until 2002.
Since then, he has represented Congressional District 7 of Arizona, and education has
remained among his top policy concerns. He has served as a member of the Committee on Education and Labor, helping to fund early childhood & preschool education programs including Head Start. Through his work, Raúl has worked to improve the consistently underfunded education system and conduct decisions and research on an issue that remains dear to him.
A member of the House Committee of Natural Resources, Raúl has been appointed Chairman of the National Parks, Forests and Public Lands Subcommittee and within weeks of attaining the position, has protected much of our public lands from being sold off under the 2008 federal budget.
Raúl also continues to serve on the Committee on Small Business, helping to empower small business owners and entrepreneurs. He also serves as a Senior Whip and 1st vice chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
A native Tucsonan and son of a bracero, Raúl has been advocating for community needs for more than 30 years. Before entering Congress, Raúl served as Pima County Supervisor and Tucson Unified School District School Board Member. Raúl, his wife Ramona and three daughters Adelita, Raquel, and Marisa, have a lifelong commitment to improving the quality of life in the community.
Raúl has embraced his congressional district and will continue to be a strong voice for the cause of social justice, cultural tolerance, and civil rights.
